1) A Visual Dissection of an Epic Trip

View photo here

We have always wanted to challenge ourselves by creating a narrative graphic
publication that is designed with the concept of randomness. It is a topic close
to our heart because in our studio, we have experienced many times what
seemed to be unrelated events or things that sparks revelations in our works
or processes. Psychologists would term these experiences as Apophenia- the
universal human tendency to perceive connections and meaning in things that
are unrelated. And what is randomness without being spontaneous? Aleatoricism
is the creation of art by chance, exploiting the principle of randomness. It is to
give up control and being unconstrained by techniques or methods.

Using these two theories, we created a story completely drafted by an online word
generator that produces poetry through algorithms and artificial intelligence. We
fed the software with Risograph terminology and words that we used regularly in
our studio, culminating into a hilarious, absurd and mysterious narrative. We
then interpreted it and produced visuals in the form of typography, illustrations
and graphics.

For the first time in our studio, we managed to incorporated scanimation, a print
effect that works by moving a striped transparent overlay across an interlaced
picture, further creating an amalgamation of improbabilities and psychedelic wonder.

We hope you enjoyed the trip, will be as fascinated as we are in our journey of
capturing unpredictability.

2) Nice Dreams and a Bag of Chips

Our dreams are a bizarre and unpredictable distortion of our waking reality.
Djohan found this potent and haphazard interplay between dreams and reality
to be a major source of inspiration for our 2020 calendar theme. In it, he
captures the concept in a series of artwork sequenced like a silent film, with
a story that is open to interpretation, in the most vibrant and tonally resonant
of colours – an ambient crossover that breaks down the wall between subconscious
truths and their conscious manifestations. This is a calendar designed to have dual
functionality. In the era of sustainability and upcycling, we decided to work on a
series of illustrations that users may use as wall art after the year ends and its
main purpose as a calendar has been fulfilled. We spent a great amount of time
conceptualising, designing, and printing the calendars in Risograph – a technique
that employs stencils to print each layer on an artwork in spot colours. We’ve
perforated each calendar artwork by hand, so that you’ll be able to tear them
out at the end of each month and have it as an individual art print that you may
hang on your wall! This calendar was created using premium acid-free paper and
vegetable-based inks. We hope that our calendars will stand you in good stead
and keep you in great company for the new year.

About Knuckles & Notch

Knuckles & Notch is founded in early 2014 by creative duo – Djohan Hanapi & Goh Yun Jin (Marl),
K&N (for short) is a Risograph publishing and print studio with a love for all things analogue.
As creatives, we hope to explore the possibilities of print and colour through publishing and
producing our own zines, publications and prints, working with artists who are attempting to
achieve effects that lie beyond conventional printing processes, and collaborating with people
who are willing to engage, explore, and push, the envelop when it comes to contemporary
small-scale publishing. We also aim to provide artist, craftspersons, art directors, presses,
publishers, anyone with the sense of aesthetics, an alternative to the prevailing printing
processes available.
